Who we are

Shirley Robertson Children’s Centre prides itself on welcoming the whole family. We endeavor to make you and your family’s time at SRCC a positive and enjoyable experience.

At SRCC we endeavor to create an indoor and outdoor environment that is natural, inviting, inclusive and rich of possibilities. We aim for our program to reflect our local community, families and educators using the service.

We believe in teaching our children about loving nature, respecting the environment and working towards developing sustainable practices that are environmentally friendly. We will support children to develop understanding and respect about the Australian Heritage, Australian indigenous culture with some emphasis on our local Wurundjeri people.

Through recognizing individual strengths and needs of families within the community, we ensure that all individual educational and care needs are met.

Our Philosophy

Shirley Robertson Children’s Centre prides itself on welcoming the whole family. We endeavour to make you and your family’s time at SRCC a positive and enjoyable experience.

At SRCC we strive to create an indoor and outdoor environment that is natural, inviting and rich with possibilities. We aim for our program to reflect our families, educators and the local community.

We believe in teaching our children about loving nature, respecting the environment and working towards developing sustainable and environmentally friendly practices. We support children to develop understanding and respect around our Australian heritage and Australia's First Nations peoples, with an emphasis on our local Wurundjeri community.

Through recognising individual strengths and needs of families within the community, we ensure that all individual educational and care needs are met. As early childhood educators at SRCC we consider the following elements to be critical in ensuring these needs are met:

Encouragement of Learning

Children learn through play and do so at their optimum level when provided with experiences and opportunities that foster their own natural curiosity, enjoyment and confidence. Our objectives are to provide positive opportunities for child development and to ensure that all areas of the National Early Years Learning Framework are being met. Our program is based on an emergent curriculum and pedagogical teaching (a style of teaching that includes critical reflection) aiming to capture the child, the family and the educator’s voice throughout our program. We offer a flexible routine and indoor/outdoor program to ensure children’s interests are at the forefront of our educational program.

Respect for Individual Needs

We value and understand that each child is a unique and very special person, growing within a unique environment. Each child’s individual needs are recognised, respected and met by educators. Each child’s views and voice is valued and taken into consideration in collaborative decision-making. We understand that each child develops at their own pace and our programming and documentation is based on children’s strengths and abilities to encourage a love of learning. We acknowledge that parents are the primary educators of their children, and we pride ourselves on developing mutually respectful and engaging relationships where parents and educators share a common goal in the overall growth and development of their child.

A Safe and Stimulating Environment

Educators work to ensure all children and families feel safe, secure and supported at SRCC. We work to create relationships of genuine respect and care. Educators ensure all families and children feel equally valued, respected and cared for, contributing to a positive sense of wellbeing. We endeavour to create an indoor and outdoor environment that is enjoyable and safe for children and their families.

Family Involvement

Involving families in our program assists children’s healthy development of identity. We value each child’s family and their importance to their child and encourage them to engage where possible and in various avenues of support to our centre. SRCC prides itself on welcoming the whole family. We celebrate diversity, and all families have the right of equal access to our centre. We believe that parent and educator’s communication is vital in providing a high standard of care for children.

SRCC is governed by a volunteer parent Committee of Management (CoM) which is elected annually. Individuals can nominate to become a member of the CoM. Sub-committees also provide an opportunity for parents to become involved in the management of SRCC.

SRCC provide frequent and varied opportunities for parents to become involved in many aspects of SRCC, including fundraising, maintenance, resources, spending time with children, assisting on excursions and donating recyclable materials.

A responsive and flexible children’s service is achieved through the positive involvement of families in SRCC’s program. Minimum participation would see parents and staff communicating openly and frequently with information relating to their child.

Staff Development

At SRCC we provide a professional learning environment, we value each member of our team and their professionalism and dedication to the centre. We pride ourselves on ensuring each member of our team is well resourced in both time and materials to implement highly educational programs for your child. The encouragement of further learning and education is an integral part of our commitment to our educators and your family to ensure your child receives the best possible care and education. Professional development is conducted regularly both on and off site.

Our Program

Here at SRCC we use the ‘Walker Learning Approach’ to plan, observe, reflect, implement and evaluate our program and your children's learning journals.

What is the ‘Walker Learning Approach’?
The Walker Learning Approach is revolutionising early childhood and primary teaching approaches through an evidence based pedagogy. It provides an authentic personalised learning model of teaching and learning that is effective across all cultural, economical, geographical, religious and social spectrums. The pedagogy uses developmentally appropriate ways of helping to engage children in meaningful and relevant strategies that enhance academic skills alongside social and emotional development.
